Default Engine temperature.

Had a local guy rebuild my 1976 L82. Kept the block, crank, rods & 160 t-stat. Other parts new. Now 355ci. Flywheel dyno turns 470hp @ 6200. Engine temp is 158 just below t-stat and oil pan is 200, both with IR thermo. Running 20-50 BradPenn oil. Engine guy likes it cooler under the hood. What do you guys think? Should the coolant be closer to the oil? Or leave it alone?

Temps sound good for a 160 degree thermostat. The cooler temps are better for power, but you get a bit more wear at 160 versus 180 degrees.

I prefer running a 180* on the street. Promotes quicker moisture evaporation, and being traction limited anyway I'm not particularly worried about the nominal "loss" of HP vs. a 160*. As for keeping under-hood temps down to provide for a cool A/F charge, install a properly isolated cold air induction system and it'll be nearer to ambient than can be ingested from beneath the hood, whatever the stat. My $.02.

I personally/professionally do not get all caught up in dyno numbers. They are all well and fine.....if that is your thing....BUT I am more concerned that the engine oil is getting hot enough to get the moisture out as previously stated by 'JimLentz' and 'The SkunkWorks'.
