I removed the Hurst Comp + shifter to replace the bushings and clips and found there were no stop screws and jam nuts.
The tranny felt a little tight engaging 2nd and some times first. What affect would the missing stops have?
Thanks,
gary
The stop screws prevent over travel. If you shift normally there will be no ill effects with them missing. If you are in the habit of banging gears expect bent shift rods, and possibly damaged forks + misc other internal tranny parts.
Thanks Marcus,
I just got in from working on it. I removed the shifter, cleaned it and lightly sprayed some white grease in it. Installed new bushings and spring clips and installed new 3/8-24x1.125" gr 8 hex head screws. The reverse rod was way out of adjustment. I used a 1/4" brass rod for an alignment pin.
I had to remove the exhaust because there was no way to get my hands up there to work.
I'll take it for a test run to see if it shifts any better.

gtr,
The "grease" is a BAD idea, it will attract dirt, and lots of it!! If you were to take the shifter completly apart (noting which way the thin shims go) you should use a dry film lubricant. PB blaster makes one and there is also one in a black can used on motorcycle/go-cart chains. If you take the Hurst apart you will be amazed how much more dirt there is in there.

Like the others, I use a silicone based dry lube. However, if you used the grease sparingly, you should be alright for a while. Just stay out of the dirt! You may eventually have to clean it out again...
Thanks guys,
I cleaned a lot of grease out of there and it was gritty to the feel. It felt much better after cleaning and a Light ccoat of the spray grease. This stuff dries to a film so I think it will be ok. This is the first time the bushings were changed and the shifter cleaned since it was installed back in 1981.
It was a PITA to get at and adjust though. :smash:
Feels a lot better during shifts.
