Default Driver door won't open..

Yesterday, I tried to open the driver side door and it acted like it was locked...just went down. I had to open the passenger side door and open the driver's side door from the inside. I removed the door panel, the plastic barrier and the access panel and tried the outside door latch while looking inside the door...NOTHING MOVED. Can't find the vertical rod that the door latch is attached to and opens the door. It's not where it's supposed to be NOR is it anywhere in the door! It's worked perfectly since I had the car (15 years)..now this. HELP!!!

Take the metal cover off at the bottom of the door so you can reach inside with a magnet or grabber tool. I'sure it fell down in the door.

I just replaced both of my door handles this week on my 1969. The bottom of the handle where the rod attaches on one side simply sheared off. Though there are two different types of clips that hold the top of the rod and the bottom of the rod, after 40 years they may have fallen off.
All I can say is I hope your hands are not too big, both my hands are cut to shreads having just finishing both doors, neither which would open probably explaining why the back window of my convertible top was cut out! Don't give up, mine finally are operating like new!!
Good luck
