Hi cdw,
That is the RFI shield. It covers the points.
When the size and completeness of the distributor shielding changed in the late 70 model year the shielding was added so the points weren't heard in the radio.
I'd expect to see it on a 73 distributor.
Regards,
Alan

There should be a little opening in the shield so the dwell can still be set. The shield opening and the points adjustment can be seen when the little 'door' on the distributor cap is slid up.

The shield is a nice find! Most were tossed years ago. Shows originality.

To add performance you should put in new advance spring and weight kit. The smog era distributors had performance limiting timing curves.

I would pull the tach drive out and check its condition before using the dist. If the dist was rebuilt as said the tach drive should be in good condition and properly lubricated.

thanks mikem. i have spring and weight kit ready. i don't think the guy knew much about the dizzy. he said it did not work very well on his crate motor because the crate motor needed a hei to work properly.probably because the springs were so heavy.
