Well, replacing a pinion bearing in the rear end, and decided to pull the oil pan and replace a seeping gasket. A few select pic of innards.
The car's been in the family for 40 years, this year. In 78 we tossed the original big block and replaced with a '77 manufactured LS6 crate motor. After a refresh 9,000 miles ago the tune is pretty mild, running 355 RWHP/405 RWTQ (with reproduction Jet Hot coated exhaust manifolds). Also, moderate Crane hydraulic cam, "198" GM intake, and a Holley 770 SA. The heads are the steel open chamber "replacement" heads, giving 10.2 cr by the book. The car's got 42,000 original miles.
Oh no, the motor looks fine. When the last time the pan was attached it was apparently less than a stellar job, and while the car is up on a rack we decided to pull it and reinstall a little more carefully with new gaskets. It was seeping more oil than I liked around the gaskets.
Looks like someone spent a lot of time balancing the rods and Pistons from the grinding marks on the rod cap. Looks good, are you going with a one piece pan gasket?
