I've got an Auto Meter Pro shift lite mounted to my steering column. Three wires is all it takes. Red=switched 12v source. Black=ground. Green=tachometer signal from tach terminal on distributor. My shift lite has the replaceable "pills" to change the rpm setting.
I have the factory tach and HEI. This was probably one of the easiest mods that I have done.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
One thing I know about shift lights is to set them a few hundred RPM's below where you want to shift as it takes time from the time you see the light to react, let off the gas and shift.
When my wife 1st drove my 72 LT-1 at the Drags, I told her to shift it around 7K RPMs later while talking to her I asked her where she was shifting it....her reply, I don't remember, I just watch the other car and if they are gaining on me I shift it, the motor would still pull at 7200 RPM but, I was not planning on using the excess. The following week, I installed a rev limiter set at 7250RPM and shift light set to 7K. My wife then told me the light flashing while autocrossing the Vette bothered her, I told her shift it up another gear and your problems will go away!
