Richmond 6 speed transmission???
#101
I hear yah Gary, but Im not pulling it back out. If it gives me any trouble I will have no choice and pull it back out. I can say the original trans input shaft and pilot bearing surface looked great. Also the trans slid into the bell housing like butter and my engine has the needle bearing, not bushed pilot bearing.
Easy with a transmission jack, and next time I will have one.
Hopefully I will be ok.

Could you please explain why you prefer the 5-speed for street driving?
My only experience with a 6-speed is with my 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 (3.92 rear end). The car is great, but I find that I prefer cruising in 5th gear (75MPH, @2200RPM) than 6th gear (75MPH, @1650RPM).
I question whether I would even use a 6th gear in my C3 ('71, 350/270).
Thanks

I'm guessing his 5 speed may have a wider gear spread and less shifting for every day use ??? Not sure

1st 3.28
2nd 2.14
3rd 1.57
4th 1.24

Just a note on the bell zeroing. From what I've seen, the original 621 GM bellhousings were pretty good. If it was an aftermarket, I wouldn't trust it at all.
The issue with being more than 0.005" out is not with the pilot bearing. It causes a tilt in the input shaft. That puts pressure on the input shaft bearing and misaligns the input shaft gear with the countershaft gear. By the time you hear a whine, the damage is done to all those parts.
Sorry to be the one to point it out at this stage, but recently ran across someone who tried using a truck bell, with the larger bearing retainer hole. And also someone putting in a tremec and didn't even realize the dowel pins were needed at all.

I did zero in my new bell housing in when I installed the Tremec 5 speed in my Camaro Gary.
Being this is the original factory GM bell housing and that the S-T10 I removed shifted like butter in all respects, I let this slide.
Mistake ? Maybe, but I wont run it hard or long if I have any issues.
I hear you loud and clear though, and would never do the above with any other housing or no dowel pins > OMG !
So are my gear ratios similar to what you have other than 6th gear ?
Thanks

With the 5 speed 4th is 1:1 which is almost the same as the car came with, and I go into 5th when I hit the highway or above 50 mph. I can drop down to 45 and pull back up in 5th.
I also did not want to make extensive mods to the car, just bolt in's.
As a side - there is a 7 speed people are talking about. I don't know if that is really necessary.. I mean you could go with a 4 speed or 5 speed and a HORNE overdrive ( as MOTION did) and have 8 or 10 gears... but why? Maybe if you have a very narrow power band..

SST trans kits : 5 speed ratios:
TKO 500 - 3.27; 1.98; 1.34; 1.00; .068
TOKO 600 - 2.87; 1.89; 1.28; 1.00; 0.64 ALSO AVAIL 0.82
I WENT WITH THE 600 AND 0.64...

Hi Blue
I totally agree 5 gears is enough, I put the exact TKO 600 with the .064 > 5th in my Camaro.
I could not go wrong with this 6 speed Richmond at $3K for my project, so I pulled the trigger. It will be fun regardless, and I mostly will go to a few car shows and hot August nights. That's about it other than a auto cross.
Working my tail off to try to get the car ready by mid June. We will see if I make it
Cheers Dale

They show up every once and a while, they replaced the tail shaft of the T10 and Rock Crusher 4 speed's. There was one on E bay a few months back..

Yanko also used the overdrive , they show up on sale sites all the time. Motion used the universal fit on the Camaro and the tail shaft kind on the Vettes if I remember right...
If you ever see a Motion Camaro or Corvette there is a second shift handle on the side of the tunnel - it's the Hone Overdrive.
You could have a 4:33 and 3:08 or 3:90 and 2:73 in the same car - that's great...just throw the lever.......

Really brings back memories Blue.
My dad and I bracket raced a 66 when I was 17-21 years old. The original 425 hp 427 when into our 3/4 ton 71 Suburban with a 4 speed, 4.11s and a Hone over drive. That was our tow rig.
Our car had a High CR 427 we build with ZL1 camshaft, Alum heads , big valves and so on, and it started with a 4 speed. I ran 10.60s about 129 mph when I was 18 in that car. My dad Ray was a president of a Corvette club for 10 years, and he was a great guy, and hell of a engine builder. He taught me so much as my mentor.
We finally got it to run 10.20s 131mph but then of course all the breakage started to happen, so we went to a Dana 60 set up and a Turbo 400 with a clutch in front of it.
That was a neat combo back then in the mid to late 70s for a bracket car.
Dads street car at the time was a 69 with a L88. I had a pretty whip as 67 with a 427 I built from spare parts and new stuff.
What was really fun was the tow rig Suburban also, looked like an ambulance but would stomp most stock mustangs and small block Cuda's in a friendly unsuspecting street race. It still had the 292 6 cyl emblem on each front fender. He He He
When dad finally had enough, that's when I went to motor bikes.

I ran Pontiac in the days, 68 RAIII Firebird, I lived on LI and the car was very quick (high 10's) after a "few mods". I would stop by MOTION Performance as I lived close to them. They did some crazy mods, both in the body work and engines.
I always wanted a Hone Overdrive, but could not afford one.
A friend had one in his 68 Camaro and it was a lot of fun... You would see them at L.I. National Speedway and Englishtown. The 1/8 th mile Islip speedway was packed with them on the street cars..
The rumor is that the next product will be a Chevy "friendly" unit like the universal unit sold in the 60-70's.
There was one at the Swap Meet on Sunday (universal w/ Camaro mount) - did not last long - sold. He would not quote a price - said make an offer- someone did ... gone..

That was a very quick car back then Blue, the early firebirds ran hard. In fact that is the car my dad took me out in on a country road, and let me power shift through the gears for the very first time.
He owed a car lot for over 30 years and I was the lot boy, washing the cars buffing and detailing. One day he drove home a 68 or 69 ? Gold Firebird 400 with 19 K miles on it, then we went for a drive.
Seems like a lifetime ago now !
