I've been reading on here about spreader bars and sounded like a good investment. I purchased from Speed Direct. I have 68 stock L-79 with long w/pump and bar is hitting the bottom of w/pump pulley which is 2 groove. Pulley is 3" deep. What kind of replacement will fit for clearance? Also I asked here a while back what stock measurement should be between arms and was told 26 3/8" but didn't ask from what to what. With brackets installed and spreader bar adjusted close my measurement is 22 3/8" from eye to eye. This seems short compared to amount of threads available. Am I looking for trouble when there isn't any? Thanks to all for info from here on forum! Tom
It's been awhile since I installed my bar and the cars in storage making taking a photo impossible right now, but:
The brackets that attach to the control arm, I think they can be reversed side to side and therefore flipped over, and they MIGHT give you a put more room under the pully.
Like I said, I could be wrong, but truthfully, cannot recall for sure.
I hope I explained it right.
Photos are worth a 1000 words, have any of your exact issue?
I put a speed direct spreader bar on my '69 L46 basically the same motor.
The brackets were both the same on either side. Your long water pump must be the problem. The bar clears the power steering pump by about 3/8" but I needed a spacer for fan clearance. Hope this helps
You were right-short pump. Problem was PO had installed Flex Lite fan not giving me clearance from fan. Installed 1/2" spacer and works fine now. Thanks for the help!
