Questions About Backspace & Offset of 17x8 Wheels????
I am thinking of getting a set of American Racing Torq Thrust Originals (TTO's) for my 79 &/or 81. I have seen where people have been able to use 4" Backspace 17x8 wheels without any Alterations. The wheels I am thinking of, have this description on the Mfg's website:
Part Number Size Lug Size Offset Backspace
VN3097861 17" x 8" 5x120.70 0 4.50"
I do not understand how a 8" wheel can have "0" offset & a backspace of 4.5"? If anyone understands this, please school me on this.
Or, if someone is using this wheel in this size, please let me know how they fit, how far from the lip of the wheelwell & if any interference is to be addressed.
If required for the look I want, I will order custom but much prefer to buy "off the shelf".
By the way, I want to paint them to simulate the look of oxidized Magnesium & install Freeze Plugs in the Hub Openings like the 60's Race Cars.
Thanks very Much! Tim

Offset is calculated using the overall width of the wheel, from outer bead flange to outer bead flange. This width is typically ~1" greater than the advertised width of the wheel, which is measured between the bead seats. So your 8" wide wheel is really about 9" wide overall, and 0 offset of 9" is 4.5".

Hi, I just wanted to update this thread. I just installed the American Racing Torq Thrust Originals 17x8 (VN3097861) on my 79 with Nitto NT555 Tires, 255x45ZR17 on the Front & 255/50ZR17 on the Rear. I also needed Open Ended Cone Lug Nuts & I need to Install Longer Wheel Studs. This Made my car ride a lot more "Modern". It is also very Cost Effective!
