Default Transmission tunnel insulation

I will be reinstalling my 4 speed transmission soon in my 1970. Should I replace the insulation with a stock replacement or is the a better material to use?

Thanks

Hi JLm,
The original insulation of course installed on the transmission side of the tunnel. Most of the new heat barrier materials I see are installed on the interior side of the tunnel.
I'd put an original one in place and then think about doing the interior barrier when you're working on the interior some day.
Regards,
Alan

I agree with Alan completely. Put the stock insulation in while the transmission is out––it's the only way. You can look at other products for the interior side of the tunnel.

The original tunnel insulation, when combined with the foam collar that sits on the bell housing, is quite effective at doing its job. It's often, unfortunately, tossed out at some point during a car's life.

I added the foam collar and DEI firewall shielding.

It helps a lot.

Not to hi-jack this thread but can the foam collar be added with the automatic transmission installed?

Thanks

Russ

I added one to my 70 with its 4-speed installed. I did it from the top. It's just an interference fit between the tunnel and the bellhousing. Worth doing.

I just recently sold a 2010 F250 that had a turbo-diesel in it. The turbo was near the firewall but the heat hardly transferred into the cabin. They come with a full firewall insulation setup. I have been throwing around the idea of going to the junk yard and seeing if I can score some of the firewall insulation from one of those and retrofit it to my '80 - ???
