Default Missing "Tapping Plate"

Hi All,

On my '69 coupe, the passenger side roof bow is missing the tapping plate that's used to attach the roof panel locating wedge mounting plate. Access to the cavity where this piece resides is from a small opening on the bottom of the bow just above the door jamb and a narrow slot from the back side.

I would like to know if anyone's ever had to replace this, and if so, where you got the part and how you managed to get in place and and stay there.

Thanks,
-Doug

Hi Doug,
REALLY wishing and hoping here!!!!!
Is there any chance the tapping plate is still in the lock pillar?
If you reach up through the #3 body mount access from the rear wheel-well it might be there.
As you reach up you should first feel a soft foam pad that's a sound deadener. Might it be laying on top of that pad. Pull the pad down and the plate may drop to where you can reach it.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks a bunch Alan. Your wishing and hoping paid off in this instance! It was wedged in pretty tightly where the red rectangle is in the picture. With a bright flashlight, it was just barely visible. I wiggled it loose with a thin blade screwdriver and it fell and landed onto the top of the door jamb. I was then able to fish it back into place with a piece of bailing wire. My guess is that it vibrated loose in the body shop when sanding.

Glad Alan's info helped you out. He also helped me avoid your problem in the first place when I wanted to remove the locating pin plate but wasn't sure the backing plate would stay put.

He had me loosen one bolt of the locating pin plate and remove the other bolt. Then I was instructed to swivel the pin plate around to uncover the other hole and insert a temporary working bolt to hold the backing plate in place and then remove the other locating pin plate bolt to remove the pin plate. Finally another temporary bolt was inserted into the second hole to securely hold the backing plate in place while working on the body. Simple, but ingenious and possibly not something I would've thought to do. Just another example of the invaluable information forum members share on this board!
