I'm running a small block 400 .030 over
291 camel humps
Edelbrock performer intake
750 holley
L79 cam with 1.6 rockers
I simply can't figure out what the issue is, it goes from start up to 250 in no time! And I don't want to ruin my engine. I used to have a mechanical fan without a shroud. Figured that was the issue, so after that I installed an electric fan, still the same issue. Lately I've heard about there being an airdam factory? I have a 75 front clip on my 72 (not my doing) do I need a factory air dam?
Did this problem just show up? Did you change anything just prior to the over heating problem arising? How long have you been running this engine in it's current state?

My car started as a project and when we first got everything working it was working just fine. Could let it idle and sit there for 30 min without an issue. It's been ran about 5 times since to see if we fixed the issue. But to no prevail.
Its not a stuck thermostat is it? Does the radiator get hot as well? I usually drill a 1/16 hole in the thermostat so it bleeds the air out of the system. Just making sure we don't miss anything....

I'm seeing high temps on the gauge. And I've already changed the thermostat many times, from 195 to 160 then ran it without a thermostat and still nothing, other than taking longer to get to that temperature.
Have you had this car on the road at all with this engine in the car?
The '75 front end does draw air from underneath the bumper, so they do have an air dam that directs air up and into the radiator.
Without this the car may in fact overhead on the road, particularly while the engine is under load. Since it really is only effective while moving forward, it shouldn't contribute significantly to the problem you've identified if it only occurs at idle. That's the reason for the above question.

You are missing the hood to radiator support foam seal. That would definitely help. Check to see if you are missing any other seals. All air entering the front end should be going through the radiator. As mentioned above, make sure timing isn't retarded. Make sure your vacuum advance is operating properly.
