Default Strut Rod Bracket Removal

I am replacing the rear strut rods. A couple of manuals I have say to remove the bracket ( the one with the camber adjustments) attached to the carrier. I have removed the old strut rods without removing the bracket. Why does the bracket need to be removed? Thanks for any info. It is a 1968.

Hi r,
I don't think it needs to be removed.
But you're right the Chassis Service Manual indicates the bracket needs to be removed???
Could it be that it's easier to get the cam bolts in place through the strut rod bushings with the bracket dropped and the use the 4 bolts to pull the bracket/strut rods into place?
Regards,
Alan

Alan, Thanks for reply. That may be the reason to remove it. It seems no big deal to remove it, I just thought maybe I was missing something I should be doing. Thanks again. Gary

I do know that sometimes I have to because the strut rod cam bolts will not come out due to how they were installed with the heads of the cam bolts to the rear....and they will hit the spring and will not come out.

That is the only time you have to remove the bracket...

When I installed my VB&P adjustable struts they were a really tight fit.
It was easiest to remove the bracket from the differential & tap them into place while off the car. After reinstalling the bracket, it was easy to attach the struts to the shock mounts. Good luck!

just finished up the job today, i bought eckler poly adjustables with forged ends
on my 82 anyways

i happened to have a long 1.5 inch dia pipe i use to lever the bracket opening wider, so the new parts can go in

let one side of the spring go, loosen the spring mount bolts, and the cam clears, i installed the nut on the other side to avoids this next time

grueling job....i don't know how you guys do it in a few hours, took me 10, but i clean stuff

and FINALLY, the back wiggle/steer went away,i have confidence driving it now, before i was afraid it would let loose, bc it did and often

i couldn't trust it , i said is this how a c3 handle?, bc it handled like crap, a Honda civic can run circle around it

must be a popular upgrade since there 3 or 4 thread on this topic going on now
