Default 200-4r Cooling Line Fitting

I'm replacing the cooling lines on my newly installed 200-4r since the fittings from the old turbo 350 were pretty rounded. I pick up some 5/16 line at Advance, and the upper line went in ok, but the fitting for the lower line doesn't seem to bottom out in the tranny, so the line stays loose. The fitting is about 1/2" long, do I just need a longer fitting?

I haven't been under my Hurst/Olds in a while and don't have a 2004R sitting around any longer but I'm fairly certain that the fittings were about 3/4" long or so if I remember correctly. - (5/16" inverted flare (1/2-20 thread.

You should be able to pull the short fitting back, they push the line in until it seats and put a mark on it with a sharpie when it's "even" with the end of the adapter in the trans. Then just see how long it travels in to the adapter on the trans. (Replacement fittings will sometimes stick out a bit (the threaded area), but better a slightly longer fitting with more threads exposed, than a slightly shorter one that does not seat properly.

Or, just thread in the current fitting, push the line in until is seats into the trans and mark it to see ho much longer of a fitting you may need.

It's been awhile, but I believe they use an inverted flare, so you'll have to re-flare the same way if you have fittings currently on both ends.

Also, they may still have "extension / adapter fittings" 5/16" male to 5/16" female inverted flare that have a more shallow depth, that you can purchase to insert into the current adapter in the trans, and thread your line with the 1/2" adapter into.

Did you pick up 5/16" brake line? Brake line fittings are 'straight' threaded. I think that trans cooler line fittings are 'pipe' threaded. {At least, that's what comes to mind...I could be mistaken.}

I just happen to have a freshly rebuilt 2004R in the basement. The adapter fitting is straight thread on the end in the trans, it threads all the way in and seals on the shoulder. The end of the adapter from the line is 5/15 tube, inverted flare, just like the th350 or th400.

You know what else is odd with those transmissions: If I remember correctly, the thread in the transmission itself appears to be a pipe thread but it's actually not. When I had one of mine rebuilt for the Grand National, I was chatting with the rebuilder and he was mentioning that he get's them in all the time where the transmission is cracked because the adapter was missing and someone tried to install at pipe thread fitting. He said the threads are close but "not quite".

With all of the 2004R's I had around, I never did confirm that for myself, but I did see it mentioned online a few times over the years. Not sure if that's just some "urban legend" or not..

'75 was right, I checked my old Turbo 350 and the fittings were right there. I pulled them out, popped then into the 200-4r, and I'm all set. Thanks guys!
