Has anybody ever used silicon radiator hose tape to build up the inlet on a radiator? The upper hose on my 1977 is a little loose fitting on my new American Eagle AE718 radiator. The lower fits perfect. Both hoses are brand new. I think if I put a few wraps of high temp tape on the inlet it would be enough to make the upper hose fit more snuggly.
The reason its loose is because the stock radiator hose has a 1-1/2" ID and my new radiator upper inlet is 1-1/3". I was able to snug it down with a clamp but its not good enough for me. Lower was perfect. That's because the outlet on the new radiator is 1-1/2" which is correct.
used a piece of roofing membrane to do that once on a friends car. worked just fine. have also heard of wrapping bicycle innertube, but the self-healing tape/water shield roofing stuff is cleaner and easier.
Hi Jgc,
Does the new outlet have the raised 'rib' at it's end.
That really helps keeps the worm type clamp from slipping off the end outlet and also helps keep the hose from moving from under the clamp.
I'd think that 'rib' would give you some protection from the pressure blowing the hose off the outlet if you can get a good seal.

Alan

Yes, it has the rib but still... the hose is not snug when I slip it on. It goes on VERY easily. I don't think its going to leak but adding some high temp tape around the inlet pipe can't hurt. I also want to pick up a few of the better hose clamps. I saw hose clamps that have beveled edges on them so that when they are tightened they won't dig into the rubber hose. I need to pick a few up for the upper hose.
I don't consider that a hijack, he is on topic with the same issue, hopefully it adds useful information to this thread for someone facing a similar problem...
Actually I've been in conversation with the original poster about this situation via pm's didn't mean any harm by it but if it's offended someone or broken some forum rule let me know and I'll remove my post
