Default Speedometer Flutter

The speedo needle on my '79 with about 50k on the clock has always wavered considerably at low speed (say below 10 mph). Very recently I notice some very minor flutter moderate (say 35 mph) speed that increases with speed (easily noticeable around 80 mph).

I have a late production '79 with the "updated" 85 mph speedometer.

What is/are the likely problem(s).

I've considered having the speedo refaced and reworked for a higher speed. Would it be good to do that sooner rather than later when it may have more problems.

BTW, I have cruise control and the transducer was replaced (remanufactured unit) about 300-400 miles ago. The low speed flutter was the same before and after the replacement.

I had the 140 mph version and I swapped it for a 165 mph version rogers had.it works fine and he set the odometer to the same mileage the old one had. My old one was 13 mph off at low speed and accurate at 70 so mine was acting differently than yours.
So far I'd say he does a good job.

My '79 was fluttering & bouncing a bit as well...solution:

Remove gage cluster that speedo is mounted to, disconnect the speedo
on the tranny, & put light oil down the speedo from inside the car..and you'll
know when it's ALL lubed cuz you'll see it drippin' off the cable at the tranny.
Be SURE to hook up the cable back to the SPEEDO itself, B4 you hook it back up
to the tranny, otherwise it'll be a real pain to align to get the speedo cable back
on the speedo correctly!!
Mine worked like a charm, smooth as silk, no jumping or fluttering!

I would take the speedo cable from the crusecontrol to the trans off .pull out the cable, lube with white grease.check the one end to the crusecontrol if it is rounded that is your problem the grease wont help.

I believe general motors recommended graphite for lubrication.

I also would recommend graphite for the cable from crusecontrol to the speedo .anything else can mess with the speedo head.for me on the cable to trany ,the graphite did not work very well .maybe I did not use enough.
