which air filter are the guys using with the FiTech system? the stock drop base snorkel won't work because it is hitting the inlet fuel line and return port on the throttle body itself....bought an edelbrock pro-flo 1208 but it will not fit under the hood. any help is appreciated - 383 stroker.
On my 78 I used an Aeromotive Phantom setup in the stock tank and ran new fuel lines. I'm using the charcoal canister system to keep the system vented. No problems so far. No FCC. That said, I'm on Atomic EFI but FiTech should be the same.
with my Fitech i use Pro-Flo Series Round Air Cleaner #1209 by Edelbrock
thanks, i will look into that clearner.....ok just looked up 1209 and it's actually 1/8" taller than the 1208 i've already tried....anyone else have any suggestions?
How bad is the stock filter base hitting? Can you bump the required clearance into it? I haven't checked this yet, guess I'll be dealing with the same issue in a couple of weeks. I have a couple of drop base filters here I can try for clearance over the fitech this weekend if you haven't found a solution yet.

haven't completely finished trying to make the stock snorkel cleaner fit, but I don't think there is anyway possible for it to work. Here is where the stock cleaner is hitting. now i have to find a solution.....nothing on this dang car has gone easy
Goody... Ok, well I'll try to remember to trial fit a couple of bases over the weekend and get back to you. I think I've read somewhere in the past about people using a small spacer between filter and carb to solve similar issue, do you think that might work?

I'll look for your response on how your trial fit goes....good luck! As for the spacer, I don't have clearance under the hood for any additional height so I don't think that will work on my car.
I'm waiting with baited breath to see what solution you come up with. This is one of my big fears with my own 79 L82 EFI conversion planned for this winter...
Has anyone come across a list of EFI throttle bodies that are known to fit with our small hood clearances? (I sure hope the new Holley Sniper fits because it's pretty high on my list right now.)
I'm guessing that the Holley Stealth fits because it's got the same dimensions as a traditional Holley carb.
--I do NOT want to have to burn $$ with an aftermarket hood, but if have to I guess it'd free up my intake options, wouldn't it? (If only I never had my wife do the monthly financial stuff I could get away with such budget over-runs! lol!)

ok, just to update you guys following this I found a solution. It's not perfect, and almost hits the distributor but it works. Here is what I used:
Edelbrock Pro-Flo 1223 filter housing. The drop base has a couple of notched out areas that just barely cleared the areas I marked in the above picture. the housing came with a 3" filter but of course that wouldn't fit under the hood so I purchased a mr. gasket 1480A 2" filter.
I tried to post last night but had some dramas with the forum. I see that you found a solution, so that's good! I agree that the stock base is definitely not going to work, but the good news is that both the aftermarket 14" drop bases that I have in the garage would work.
Firstly, this Afco base that I'm planning to use on my car, a 2" drop base (so can fit a reasonably tall filter) that I bought from Summit here: https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...0550/overview/ fits with miles of space:
Secondly, this cheap generic parts store drop base (Saas brand here in Australia) fits, has bumpouts that may be similar to what you describe on the Edelbrock housing. It is a much closer fit though. Incidentally, this base did NOT fit over the Impco LPG carb on my daily '79 F250, which is why it is a spare in my garage...:
Hope it helps!

I'm glad it fits, but it seems like a 2"er would seriously restrict flow; no?
Adam
hi Adam, i was concerned about that also, but did some research and most of the information i received said it was no problem. Might have to change it more often, but I rarely actually drive the car so that shouldn't be a big problem. I'm going to watch it and if it becomes an issue replace it with a K&N high flow filter. Good luck with your conversion and let me know how it goes. Just in case you are interested, here is my journey with my 79. I'll be posting updates to the EFI on this one

Thanks for the pictures! your second base is exactly like the one i ended up using. One suggestion i would make would be to use a 45 degree fitting for the fuel inlet on the FiTech so that the fuel line isn't in the way of the base. I used the straight fitting and will have to change it because it hits the base and will probably be a long term problem. keep me updated on your progress and good luck!
