Default Size DOES matter...or does it??

...so I'm getting ready to put in a slightly higher performance sbc engine in my stock 76 Stingray and I want to purchase a new flywheel and heavy duty clutch kit. My research, which has been limited to checking different suppliers (Summit, Napa etc), seems to indicate an 11" disc is the correct size. A buddy of mine who is very well versed in all things Corvettes (and is a member of this forum) is telling me that 76 used a 10.5" disc...
Can someone please put this question to rest for me?
Whist I'm at it, any recommendations for a clutch kit. The new motor is rated between 360 - 400hp.

Thanks!

according to this site the factory disc was 11" but if you are replacing both parts you have to make sure they match and have the correct splines for the transmission input shaft.

I'm using the Mcleod Super Street Pro and Mcleod flywheel. Very happy with it.

I have a '76 as well and with the 468 that I have, made numerous passes down the 1320 with my Center Force Dual Friction 11" (I believe...can't remember for sure). It is still going strong and I used to slip the clutch pretty hard coming off of the line went 12.1 @ 118mph. I am pretty impressed with the clutch.

Check the bellhouse to be sure a 11" flywheel will fit. I believe that a 11" wheel will need a "621" bellhouse.

Assuming that the tranny has never been modified from stock, would there be any reason that the bellhousing would be different?

If your engine has never been modified, it probably has the small bellhouse that is used with the 10.5" flywheel. GM used flywheels that met minimum requirements, and your SBC didn't produce enough torque to need the larger clutch. Other more knowledgeable members will chime in if I'm wrong.

Why don't you wait until you take your old engine out and see what it has now, then replace it with the same size.
