71 454

I have a couple of questions regarding my '71 454 with AC. It is an LS 5, 4 speed. I was wondering if all 454 engines came from the factory with a smog pump and if they had a radiator surge/expansion tank on the Passenger side inner fender? Mine has neither one. Thank you

No A.I.R pump on the LS5. Yes, there's an expansion tank. It's unique for 454 w/ AC. I think it's finally being reproduced.

one last question. does the radiator have a cap, or is the cap on the surge tank only. Mine has a radiator cap. May be an aftermarket radiator, as it looks near new. Thanks again

There should only be a cap on the expansion tank.

Are you sure about that? My '72 454 had one. I don't think that was the year they were introduced, but maybe I'm wrong.

Don't know about '72, but in '71 the LS6 had the pump, but the LS5 did not.

Thanks, didn't know that. Emission requirements must have tightened in '72.

Yeah, '71 to '75 they changed a lot. EGR in '73 (I think), thermostatic air cleaner, HEI ignition and finally the catalytic converter in '75.

I believe you'll find that the 72 LS5 had AIR equipment.
