hey, I have a 71 sb with a 4 speed all stock, I rebuilt the q jet, but my choke does not work. When I hit the gas pedal the flap closes all the way and does not open a little, I can start the car but I have to pedal it until it stays running.
thanks for your help
Hi bby,
Have you checked to see that the choke coil and cover are in place and properly installed; and that the rod is in place and secured so the choke sets (opens) when you push the accelerator to the floor when the engine is cold?
You can visually check for this without starting the engine.
Regards,
Alan
Alan, yes it is in place and secure, when I press the throttle the flap closes all the way I gat set it by hand, but it feels like something is getting caught.
Hi bby,
Not being a jerk here…. have you looked carefully at the linkage to try to see what's actually supposed happens when the choke is set in order to hold the choke in that open position ,and then what's supposed to happen when the engine is warm enough to release the choke?
I guess I'd suggest that you cycle it by hand as you've tried an check to see if there's something stopping it from staying 'set' .
I replaced the choke pull-off on my q-jet and realized I could put the linkage on incorrectly.
Regards,
Alan
I agree with Alan - have another long look at your linkage and make sure it is properly set up. The divorced choke system is a relatively straight forward design, so there are limited things that can go wrong. There's a chance your pull-off is failing, but I'd suspect linkage first.
Hi bby,
The rod (black) must be attached to the small lever in the carb body that's on the INNER END of the shaft (white).
Check that when you pivot that linkage the rod moves and closes the choke vanes.
You can feel it if the rod is loose and not in the hole in the lever.

Alan

I had trouble with mine when I got a new coil, the coil i got was set up wrong so it would close the choke when warm. All I did was pull the coil off and flip it around and its worked since then. May or may not be your case but an FYI.
OK, SO I WENT AND LOOKED AT MY CARB ALL OF THE LINKAGE IS CONECTED, WHEN YOU PULL THE THROTTLE BACK THE FLAP MOVES AND DOES NOT STAY OPEN THE PART THE I HAVE CIRCLEED FROM ALAN'S PICTURE MOVES BUT NOES NOT KEEP THE FLAP OPEN, I CAN PUSH IT DOWN AND THE FLAP WILL STAY OPEN. ALAN THANKS FOR THE GREAT PICTURES AS ALWAYS
Hi bby,
Try again.
First the choke coil…. when the engine is cold the coil is tight and pulls the rod DOWN.
That moves the linkage and the choke vanes CLOSE. The 'link/lever' you circled is UP. The linkage holds it UP, if installed correctly you can't push it down with your fingers.
Then engine warms… the choke coil unwinds and pushes the rod UP.
Nothing happens until you move the accelerator linkage on the left side of the carb. AS SOON as that linkage moves it releases the 'link/lever', and it's weight (that's why it's shaped the way it is) makes it drop down which OPENS the choke vanes.
In the last picture you copied the the 'link/lever is UP and the choke is CLOSED.
In an earlier picture you can see the link/lever is DOWN and the choke is OPEN.
You can easily install the link/lever incorrectly so it works backwards.
Maybe?

Alan
Hi bby,
I added some pictures to the post you just read.

Hey Alan, how do you remove the choke thermostat cover? Does it lift off with a little prying? I think my 45 year old spring is getting weak and doesn't pull down strong enough.
Hi Dave,
On my 71 q-jet the coil base and coil is held in place by the screw you see in the pics.
The cover's forward-end and rearward-end each have a little prong on them that clips over the coil's base.
You can push it into place with your fingers, but I use a small screw driver to gently pry the cover up at one end to get it off.

Alan

Thanks Alan,
The coil base on my 454 is attached with one screw on the opposite side of yours (carb side). Looking at replacement photos of the cover, it looked like it just snapped on.
