Default More Vortec Heads questions

Still havn't done the head swap. I have learned that there are some aftermarket vortecs that are thicker and resist cracking. Who makes these?

Also how big can I go with the cam on the L48 with the Vortecs?

Couple companies mfgr aftermarket Vortec based castings.

Engine Quest (EQ)
Dart
RHS/Pro Topline
World Products
Pro Maxx

Even with 64cc chambers the L48 is going to have fairly low compression so you shouldn't try to go overboard on the camshaft duration. Something in the 270@.006 and high 2-teens/low 220@.050 range would be good but everything depends on the whole combination you have planned for the engine and driveline.

Yes to my knowledge they are all improved castings. Thicker and some have improved runners.

I have a lot of experience with the EQ heads as they are the best cyl head option we are allowed to run in a limited oval track class that we build engines for.

I also forgot to list the GMPP Bowtie Vortec cyl heads. There are 2 different ones a small port and a big port.

Remember when switching over to Vortecs you also need different rocker arms too (self aligning) so if you're keeping the stock L48 cam, might as well go 1.6 for more lift. Any aftermarket vortec head can handle it.

and valve covers too if they aren't drilled with both perimeter and center holes.
