Just recently installed a new reverse light switch. New heat shield and linkage rod also. Took a bit to get it adjusted. Worked great for about a month or so. Now lights won't shut off when shifting out of reverse. I've gone under car and disconnected rod and swiveled lever forward and back but lights will not shut off. I'm thinking heat from exhaust pipe damaged switch. Any thoughts?
You are probably right if the arm is fully in the off position. You might try disconnecting the plug on the leads from the switch to make sure the lights go out and it isn't someplace else in the wiring before you order another switch.
Hi V,
I too would like to think it's a likely a switch problem since cycling the tab by hand doesn't shut off the lights.
The tab doesn't need to move very far to shut the lights off. Only about 3/4" or less.
You should be able to 'feel' the 'detent' in the switch with your finger when you move the tab. Can you?
???
Regards,
Alan
The switch can be installed up side down. Is/was yours put on correctly?

Alan....when switch manually moved its a smooth operation. No steps to feel as if switch is engaging. Switch installed with upper tab where rod connects on top farthest from ground. Heat sheild on lower part of switch assembly. Sorry. Not home now to get a pic.
Hi V,
I recently re-plated my switch and it's mounting parts and in working with it realized I could feel the detent. Certainly nothing like a 'click', but something I could definitely feel.
So yours could be defective since you feel nothing.

Alan
