Hi,
It appears the reproduction locks fit cars from 69-82.
I guess unless you want the lock to have the 72 'keyway' one of those will work!
Regards,
Alan
Maybe you can rekey the new part or have it done by a locksmith. I don't know anything about the specific part you're talking about, as mine still has the original and I've never had reason to remove it. But I did have the opportunity to rekey the locks on a '79 Jeep CJ-7 that I rebuilt. It was actually quite simple. Maybe look into it so you can use your keys and not have to add another one to the key chain.

Hi Barry,
Not sure you if you already know Pete Lindahl or not. But he will be able to get you your lock to match your key code. If you get the one in question Pete may trade you. Here is his email pclindahl@Comcast.net
He made all my keys right for me, for my 73. The key locks are coded so that the rounded key opens glove box, spare tire lock and sets the alarm. He may already have a lock that works for you.
Hope I'm not telling you something you already know, just trying to help.
He's the best at what he does.
Regards,
Jim
The letter on the key blank is "E" from what I read a 1972 should have a "C" blank. GM changed the blank so this cylinder is unlikely to work for you. You could change other cylinders to a "E" blank key, so it appears to be correct. It would be better to search for used one or find a locksmith who can make one.
It's not a reproduction. GM part number- the parts catalog says first year for this number is 78 but I don't see a difference.
And yes I do want the 72 keyway if storage compartments were coded.
I sold my original because it was scratched up - before I knew the internals of the lock would come in handy one day.
Barry,
The key rail letters for the 72 should be as follows:
Square head key- should have the letter C (keyway)
Oval Head keys - should have the letter D (keyway)
Just shoot Pete an email, and he will take care of you, and he is really reasonable. IF you want things right.
Regards,
Jim

Reason: Correction 'C' Keyway misread key chart!
Thanks everyone. I'm just going to use the locks I have with unrestricted keyways. Got a good locksmith near downtown Columbus that has rekeyed the same sort of locks before. My original square key is C and round key is D, by the way.

You are correct Barry, The 72 square Key is C. My mistake, sorry!
Corrected above.
