This is just a hypothetical Q and it did not happen to me. I was just wondering what the concenses of the forum members would be.
Suppose you got into a race with a stranger on an otherwise vacant road somewhere and the other driver lost controll of his car and wrecked. You never touched him, he lost it all on his own. Would you go back and see if he needed help or if he was hurt? Would the type of car he was driving make a difference in whether or not you went back to help? Its probably wrong for me to say this but I would be hard pressed to go back.
Are you serious!!! You are talking about a human life. Why the hell wouldn't you go back and see if this guy needed help??? He could be seriously hurt... or dying! How old are you 10? Get serious. :mad

I would like to think that most people would go back. I don't think that the fact that you were racing or the type of car that the other person was driving would make a difference. You mention that this is a vacant road, if you don't help, who is going to?
I would go back to check on them.
However, my answer is based on my experiences from growing up in a rural part of Texas. Maybe I would feel differently if I came from one of the heavily populated areas in the north east. . . then again, maybe not!?!
Re: What would you do if.....??? (KENS78SILVERANNIV)
I didnt say I wouldnt go back. I said I would be hard pressed. By the way im 38..not 10. Sitting here behing the monitor, its what I typed, not what I did. I certainly gave people a chance to flame me so ill take it as it comes. Judging by the # of replies compared to the # of views, and the comments made so far, its hard to believe that anyone will say, they too might hesitate to go back. In reality, how often do you think the other driver would go back. Not as often as you think I bet.

Everyone has life long experiences that change the way they make these decisions. I don't think I know how it would turn out for me unless I was there and it actually happened. Unfortunately, in some areas around us, especially near DC, that guy that just lost the race is likely to crawl out of the car with a gun and end your life, just so he wins.... depends on where you're from and what you've seen as to how you end this story.
I am obligated by law to stop and render assistance. Even if I wasn't I would go back and help, but I don't street race so I wouldn't be in that exact situation.
People not stopping to render assistance is a sore spot with me, on my 13th birthday someone ran my grandmother off the road and kept going, nobody stopped to see if she was alright either. This happened in the middle of winter and she was in a ditch unconcious for almost 8 hours. If I ever found the person who did that (which is highly unlikely) I will beat them so bad even their relatives will need medical attention.
Well said Fireball and thanks. One might wonder if the other guy would turn on you in agression for his own error. Believe it or not, most of the cases ive heard of over many years, the other driver usually continues onward. At least its that way around here mostly. To eaches own I quess. Anyway I doubt any of those who feel they would hesitate will actually say so. Gives everyone food for thought huh?
The point I made about vacant roadway was to add the notion that no innocent bystanders were involved.
C3 Shark Tank, i hope your grandmother was not injured. i just want to point out that this post was not about a bystander getting run off the road. It ws about two willing participants in a speed compitition. which in and of itself is illeagal.
Ken78silveranniv,as to yur comment about my age, feel free to "spin off" however you like :D
I'm sure you're a decent human being... but your question about whether or not to help somebody who fu#@ed up while racing demands a strong response. I guess it represents everything that's wrong with the world today. People who care more about saving their own butt than going back even if it means getting in trouble.
Sorry, I don't understand "being hard pressed" to go back. Geez this past year... didn't anybody learn anything about helping each other. C'mon man!
No problem, she spent some time in the hospital but lived a good long life afterwards. I know you were talking about 2 willing people racing, it happens here with the younger crown every now and then, one will crash and the other will take off to avoid getting caught. I was just relaying my story in general about someone not stopping to help others (no flames intended to anyone). I'm pretty sure that most Corvette owners would stop as most that I've met are pretty responsible people, there are always bad apples in every group though.
Why would you NOT go back?
Fear of the accident victim? If you can't protect yourself from some dazed crash victim, take some self defense courses, as you need that skill everyday.
Fear of being caught racing? Just deny it. If you would let another human being die so you can skate, you have some deep, serious thinking to do.
Fear of a lawsuit? Many states have (or should have) "Good Samaritan" laws. Or at least get to a phone and call for help.
I believe 99% of people would help.
Fireball raises a valid point as the same goes for life here in the desert. Guns are to o prevalent NOT to consider in such a situation. If I put myself in that position, the accident is my fault to some degree as it would not have happened if I didn't race, I go back as a matter of principle.
Now to make this really sticky, do you stop for someone in distress on the side of the road who you happen to come across by chance?
No question about it...I would go back and help...even if he was drivin a civic...even if I lost it and shoved HIM off the road...no doubt about what the right thing to do is...I hope no one reading this would seriously contemplate NOT helping if in a similar or even a remotely similar situation.
since no reason was listed for beginning the race, lets add to the hypothetical scenario. If I were trying to outrace someone taunting and shooting at me on a lonely road, and they ran off the road and crashed,I don't think I would go back. For all I know they could have been Ku Kluxers,or Skinheads.Isn't it amazing how we jump to conclusions ? :jester
