I have a noise issue in the sense that the exhaust can get really loud at times and it's virtually impossible to enjoy a radio in the car.
Now, I do not have the easiest of engines in this regard and my exhaust consists out of a dual ss exhaust of 3" with bullet style mufflers under the seats and a Magnaflow straight through muffler in the rear.
The sound of the exhaust as far as the tone is concerned is great.
I just have the impression that the exhaust is bouncing off the walls of the rear compartment, creating a box like effect.
Well, dynamat style insulation will certainly help. Especially on the rear wall of the tub.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the longer the case of the muffler, the lower the volume (all other things unchanged). A 18" straight-through muffler will be quieter than the typical 14".

You already have an X-pipe, I hope?
Yes, under the rear axle
I'm not quite seeing why the rear compartment would reflect the noise that much with a rear exit exhaust.

larger case turbo style wil quiet it down some
Had bullets never cared for them seemed to make thigns worse
Cockpit acts like a speaker box
cant help but think the pipes transmit harmonic frequency throughout the car, the pipes vibrate. Wondering if clamping some type of dampening material over a given section of pipe couldnt dampen that and help out somehow.If you think about it its a long piece of pipe that vibrates, that has to contribute to interior noise/resonance outside pure exhaust note
I'm no expert but I have the Corvette Central system which has a cross over, true duals, and Magnaflows in the back. I replaced the Magnaflows with smaller ones to make it a little louder. The sound is great, deep and low. I don't know why you would have another set of mufflers under the seats/cab. Maybe there is a good reason.

Larger mufflers will help bring the volume of your exhaust down, and laying dynamat, or another sound insulator will help reduce cabin noise. In our experience, placing the sound deadening behind the seats and in the trunk was most effective, though some people go as far as doing the entire body.

A question : is this sound waves bouncing back off the ground and back to the body or is this eminating from the pipes themselves;
BTW : my mufflers are 14" ones. which were the max I could comfortably fit under the car in the rear.

Sounds backwards unless they changed it between my 71 and your 79.
This is what I found fit best. The muffler is angled so that most of it stays behind the bumper and only one side is more or less visible. Other option would have been to angle the tips down, this would have let me use a center out.
