Default Chrome rear bumper bracket question

I'm looking for a complete set of rear bumper brackets to put my 70 rear clip on my 79. I'm told that there are eight brackets total for 68-71 and there are an additional two (10 total) for 72-73. I can buy the eight 68-71 bumper brackets for $244 Canadian and the other two 72-73 brackets are an additional $118 CDN which I don't want to pay if I can do without them.

What do these additional two 72-73 rear bumper brackets bolt to? On the 69 rear clip I had the quarter panel bulge under the bumper by the marker light had the hole filled in. On a 68-71 car is the bumper not bolted to the car on the side by the marker light? Is that where the additional 72-73 rear bumper bracket goes?

Hi P,
Through 71 the outer bump 'tips' bolted directly to the fiberglass quarter panel without any brackets running to the frame rail.
The 2 brackets were added which probably make the bumper a little more impact resistant.

Alan

Thanks for clearing that up Alan. Seems pretty hoakey to have the bumper only bolt to the fiberglass on the quarter panel. I really feel like there should be a bracket there to the frame but I suppose if that's the way the factory did it it would be okay....

Is there a history of the quarter panel cracking at the bumper on the 68-71 cars that led GM to add these extra brackets on the 72-73 cars?

Hi P,
No, not that I know of.
Lets face it, the bumpers offered VERY little collision protection.
The bumpers were bolted tight against the fiberglass, so something has to give!!!! even with the addition brace.
Regards,
Alan

The safety bumpers were thought up by the feds and the insurance agencies to reduce the amount of money they had to shell out .
There are lots of chrome bumper cars out there.
It will be a very "sharp" lookin' car when you're done !

Hi Priya.
I have been following your thread as I too like the rear chrome bumper look.
In fact I just picked up a set of bumpers in driver quality for less than a $100 total off ebay last week.
The whole bracket issue will be a concern for me also.
I agree that the side bumper to fiberglass attachment looks flimsy. Any impact, like another car door or cart in a parking lot looks like it will stress crack the fiberglass.
I'll be looking into fabricating a bracket that goes all the way to the frame.
My biggest challenge right now is whether to use the 80-82 rear flex fit bumper that I originally planned on using.....or do what you are doing. Either way....some serious fiberglassing is involved or a big purchase like the ready made chrome rear bumper conversion kit from Custom Images ($600).......????

Either way, I'll be watching you and doorgunner.....

Txs for the thread and all the info.

Wish you much success with your undertaking.

I just left the 2 outer most bolts out.
They offer little support and may cause stress.
My rear bumpers are rechromed, brackets all repainted black.
I lined them up and tightened all bolts.
With the vibration, I didn't want the holes getting egged out.
You cant tell they are not installed.
The other brackets provide direct frame support.
If I ever get the car repainted they will get filled in.
