Default Engine ID Help

I need help identifying an engine. The stamp I have located reads CDF163247. I haven't had any luck deciphering what this info may tell me. Anybody know if any useful info can be learned from this number. It presently resides in a 71. It looks like a big block, I'm just trying to figure out what it is. Thanks in advance for any help.

We could use a bit more information. Could you post a picture of the engine pad? What is the block casting date?

A Chevrolet replacement engine should be stamped CE163247.
CE - Chevrolet engine or counter engine (?)
1 - 1971
63247 - sequential engine number.

The CDF decodes as follows:

Code Year CID HP BBL Appl

CDF 1985 305 150 4 Roch E4ME carb

The number portion may be a VIN derivative. Do you have a picture of the engine?

I'm not familiar with the engine designation letters (CDF) being stamped in front of the partial VIN numbers (163247). When did this occur?
Typically the letters are stamped after the engine build date (exp. T0131CDF) and the VIN derivative is stamped separately (exp. 19S163247).

You are correct that CDF is a suffix code. Given what he provided that is closest thing I could find to a true engine code. If we had a picture of the pad and the engine it would help.

I found this:

There are sometimes individual letters found on blocks like "GM" or "CFD" for the Central Foundry Division, but they are not part of the block casting number.

Here.

Hi C,
Are you looking for stamped information on the pad that's located on the block just forward of the right side cylinder head?
Regards,
Alan

The upper stamp indicates when and in which engine plant the engine was assembled and in what configuration (hp).
The lower number indicates the serial number of the car the engine was originally installed in.
