Default 81 cooling

Has anyone used a transmission cooler and by-past the radiator on a C3?

Why? If the stock cooling system is in order and the car is not overheating, you don't need an aftermarket tranny cooler.

YES. Due to a 700R4 transmission upgrade...I needed to make sure the transmission fluid temperature was in the specification of the manufacturer to not void the warranty or raise to question that the fluid is too hot.

I have. You could also run it through both for better effects, I'd think that if you did you'd want to go through the radiator. I did it because the external cooler cools better than the radiator cooler and when you have a high stall and drive like a madman extra cooling can only help.

radiator transmission cooler will get no cooler than engine temperature. (180-200 average)

separate cooler is cooled by ambient air flow,
so in theory the separate cooler could keep the transmission cooler (60-100 average).

I have proved that theory on a 200-4R. Thru the radiator first, then thru a plate style cooler. Temp sender in the pan read about 80* cooler than the coolant temps, once or twice equaled the coolant temp when driving hard
