The stud on my steering control valve has a lot of side to side play in it. It looks like the casting is made to accommodate this play. I only noticed it after I pulled the motor (I'm doing my clutch) and removed the power steering pump.
Is this valve shot or is the side to side motion controlled with hydraulc pressure?

The power steering relay rod assembly rebuild is a pretty easy and low budget project.
Slop is usually caused by ball stud and cup wear.
The ball stud is designed to have 'play' in it so that it can sense which way it needs to move. You can easily feel that play when the engine and P/S system are not running. With engine ON, that play goes away when the system has built up pressure.
That's what I thought, its been years since I worked on one of these and could not remember if that was normal or not. I'm going drop a rebuild kit in it while its apart anyway. The whole system has seepage.
