It does matter, we put the sealant on the windshield frame and use suction cups to position the glass in place. It's also important to know that if you are using a new windshield that it will be thinner than the original so if you are using urethane you'll need to fabricate some spacers. If the glass sinks into the urethane your moldings won't fit properly.
If you are using a original glass with the original style tape, I use the 5/16 tape, not the 3/8. If you are using a reproduction glass to with the 3/8, it'll help with the thickness change.

Thanks I'm using an original glass, just not my original glass. I realize the sink issue. After I test fit I will know what size ribbon to use. My AIM mentions nothing of using a dam strip or spacers. Just a polysulfide sealant, what is that? there is little residue on the bottom half of the frame but the pillars and top frame are bare, just metal. The original owner disassembled the car in 86 and left it inside a garage here in Phoenix. He broke the glass taking it out. And by ribbon I assume you mean 3m round ribbon sealer?
