Take a look at the latest CC Tech blog article, regarding C3 fuel EVAP systems.
Great article. Read the same in the latest edition of Vette Magazine. Having the gas smell issue with my 73 now. Removed and cleaned my cannister. Checked filter in the bottom, and it was fairly clean. Checked all hoses for leaks and cracks everything looks good. Car has a new tank replaced by a previous owner. Felt up around the check valve on the tank and notice no leaks. Maybe the valve needs replaced as mentioned in the article?? That won't be fun,
Jim
I had the same issue with my '73. I finally gave in and took it to a Corvette specialty shop. They found the small gasket on the side of the fuel tank was cracked. Not sure if it was the check valve gasket but I'm assuming it was. They replaced it and no more smell.

Thanks,
I'm leaning toward the check valve being the problem too. But it doesn't have any gasket does it? It just bolts to the side of the tank to a bracket. Could be the gasket around the fuel neck?? It seems to be at its worst after I drive the car. Then it will smell for awhile. If it sets for a couple of days it's not noticeableat all.
