Timing Mark
Vetters, need help with the timing mark. manuals doesn't show how to read it (what increments) are they 2 degrees for every > that point to the right as your looking at it with a timing light. I am familuar with 0 degrees and BTDC etc.............Just lost track of the marks..........

Depending on year, each mark is usually 2 degrees. However, to solve the problem and to do a really good job of setting up your timing, go down to Sears and pick up one of their adjustable timing lights for $69. It'll be the best $$ you ever spent on your car. Using the adjustable light, you always time off of the "0" (TDC) mark and don't worry about the rest. This will allow you to set up your car for total timing, and it will let you check your vacuum advance out for proper operation, etc.

I agree - the Sears adjustable timing light is super! I use it to graph mechanical advance (distributor vacuum line off carb and plugged) at every 500 RPM and also total advance at same RPM points with the vacuum advance line reattached to the carb. I also use a vacuum pump to suck on the line to the distributor and use the adjustable timing light to record degrees of vacuum which correspond to various amounts of vacuum. All this effort yields me an on-car checkout of distributor advance. No need to take out the distributor for checking at a speed shop. You get the data, make the mods you want, etc...

I agree. It just so hard to part with my 30 year old timing light. Let me think about.................ok I'll get a new one. That sure was easy to decide on. Especially, if the wife doesn't find out.
