Id' like to remove and replace my rear tail light panel on my '73 project. Is there any tutorials or reading material recommended before I start on this? I have the necessary tools I believe. Id like to see it done once before jumping off into this quagmire....
I have taken off body panels by using a heat gun and putty knife. Heat the bonding strip with the heat gun and work the putty knife in between the two panels and use a wood wedge to keep them apart and work your way around the panel till it comes off.
Hi 73,
Member DUB can certainly give you the information you'll need. He's generally along late in the afternoon and early evening.
Have you removed the paint and primer from the area so you can see the location of the seams and have you taken a look at the bonding strips under the the rear of the body?
Regards,
Alan
The seams from the exterior:
Bonding strips:
Lower right corner.
Upper right corner. Note corner strip is part of quarter panel strip!
Tailight panel to rear deck bonding strip across top.
I agree with what has been said and DUB will certainly give you the advice you need via the forum or a phone call to him if it is a lot of info. He is very good at what he does and has many of us out including me. I could have done all the work to my 69 without him. Hey Dub while I'am here.................................... ................

I had some success this afternoon. Tip of the cap to those who do this on a routine basis. Pretty hot and stuffy up in that rear well with the heat gun. I think there was some delamination of the bonding strip as I worked it off. I dont believe it's going to be reusable. I also think I'm going to remove the passenger side rear fender. Looks like the car was hit there. I see a repaired area plus gobs of bondo near the rear splash guard. The adventure begins.
Tan colored area is a repair, plus a hole near the seam.
It will be next week before I work on it again. I'll chime back in with questions I'm sure.
