Default NOS '69 Seat Belts

Is it likely that the fabric in a set of NOS 1969 corvette seat belts and harnesses has deteriorated since 1969?

What shape do the belts look like they're in?

I don't have any NOS belts. I was just wondering if the fabric in any NOS belts that has never been used, but has been in storage for over 45 years would deteriorate? Do you know if the fabric in unused belts that have been in storage for over 45 years will likely deteriorate?

Hi b,
I guess the belt could be tested.
I'd think the stitching might fail before the belt material.
Probably someone who's interested in NOS belts isn't driving a lot so is willing to take the chance?
Regards,
Alan

Good question with [seemingly] no good answer.

Nylon is tough and long-lasting but nothing is forever...

Sunlight is the #1 cause of deterioration--obviously none inside a box.

Abrasion will certain weaken nylon webbing, but again that won't happen inside a box.

Repeated stressing will cause weakness at points of stress but no stresses inside that box.

I can't find any good information regarding how fast (or even if) nylon deteriorates when unused and away from sun.

How the items were stored is the biggest issue. These are old Ford Belts. I have had 2 of these kits for about 20 years now. The kit includes all parts needed for instillation and white in color. They are date coded April 2nd of 1962. So yes, finding good 1969 NOS belts in usable condition could be possible.

Yes, I know it's possible. That's why I asked the question about fabric deterioration. But if safety is the most important consideration, would a belt by Seatbelt Solutions be a better choice than NOS '69 vette belts?
