Default '68 to '73 Taillight Diameter

Anyone know the diameter of early C3 tail light lenses? Safe to assume they're the same as my '77 just a hair over 5"?

I'm considering a graft on chrome bumper style rear as shown in these two examples,

without the actual chrome.

Hi st,
The diameter of the early lenses is also about 5-1/4".
I'm not real familiar with 77 lenses but I'll mention that at least through 73 the lenses have a 'hood' at their top that corresponds to the shape of the opening in the fiberglass taillight panel.
I don't know the shape of the panel you'll use or the shape of your lenses so don't know if this will be an issue.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the measurement. Searched quite a few threads but no precise info about it. The bolt on bumper kit is from Custom Image, much like the one on the orange car shown above. Too bad I can't just see it before I order it right?

Here is my car, and a photo of the blank bumper. I'm not going to glass it in, and at the moment I'm trying to avoid another $250 for new lenses. I'm thinking the old '77 lights can be made to fit. Not a show car so I doubt anyone would miss the hooded lenses.

Steve

Hi Steve,
In looking at your pictures it appears your later lenses will work but give a slightly different appearance than the 68-73 lenses do.

Alan

OK with me. The whole idea is for a different, but much improved appearance. At least in my eye! Looks like I have a Spring project now.

Why not ask Custom Image? They have at least one forum member here.

I really doubt if the tail lights will fit. And will look weird if they do.

By the way, mine isn't a "graft on"; its a '73 with the bumpers removed.

68-73 tail lights are close enough in diameter to the later ones that it should not be a problem , the problem you will have is the later lights are about 3/4" deeper that the earlier ones and they mount different , you will need to deepen the buckets glass up some holes and drill some some new holes , but overall its not a huge job. i'm in the process of doing it myself
