Default Screw you broken header bolt! I WON!

I made a post a few days ago about a broken header bolt that was right up against the A-arm. I had less than 2 inches of room, and I was DREADING the inevitable engine dismantle over a .79 cent bolt.

So....I decided to get creative.

1) Unbolted transmission mounts and 1 motor mount.

2) Made some relief cuts for the oil pan bolts in a 4x4, placed the 4x4 under a scissor jack and raised the side of the engine by 2 inches.

3) Made a centering jig out of some old scrap steel. (As seen in picture)

4) Cut several drill bits to make them short enough to get into the restricted area.

5) Made myself a stiff drink and started drilling:

As you can see, the centering jig was VERY tough to get centered, but it worked well enough. I let out a huge sigh of relief, left all my tools on the ground and walked away to celebrate (with another drink)

Score one for me.

Well, I still need to figure out what is wrong with the geometry of the Alternator/PS bracket that cause it to break, but thats another battle for another day.

Nice job and terrific photos. That's actually the first time I've ever seen an easy-out that worked. I've always had them break off in the bolt!

GOOD show to GO~~~~~!!!! I had a similar but much easier gig some months ago '72 vette, L98 88-91? serp drive, a/c compressor bracket, bolt into the aluminum head shattered.....

broke off smooth to the head.....took a angle grinder and cut a slot and so managed to unscrew the broken bolt....lucky it was not snug up in the head....I since put in a double threaded/ended stud....I forget the term for it.....

If you find yourself doing this all too frequently, might want to check this out. The way I understand it, the jig is so precise that all you have left after drilling is the broken bolt threads. And, they're cleaned out with a tap!

Well planned out and nicely executed....I guess the bolt wasn't bottomed out after all as evidenced by the protrusion of the essy-out.
