Need help on length needed.
I am working with tko 600 into 81 vette no cruise.
Straight from trans to dash length, anyone know what that
ideal shortest length is.
Many original nos gm speedo cables out there that will work, just need a length. Adapter already on the trans.
Thanks

Silver Sport Transmission make a correct length cable that has TKO on one end and GM Speedo on the other. No need for an adapter. https://shiftsst.com/
Maybe less expensive than buying a nos gm cable.
I'm using the Silver Sport cable, it's a quality piece.

Appreciate the info
Yeh, I've connected the original cable with adapter (haven't hit the road yet). Runs fairly close to the exhaust where it curves out of the trans though, anyone have issues with that?

YES! I have BIG issues with the way the cable comes out of the tranny. It has to be pulled up tight with cable ties to avoid the headers.
Eventually all 3 of my cables began to leak as a result of the heat coming from the headers.
Right now I am running with no speedometer. I do have Tom Tom that tells me my speed.
What is needed is a 90 degree fitting coming straight out of the tranny. I haven't looked to hard but if you find one or if anyone that has the same problem let me know

Timely, I rang my supplier and ordered a 90 degree adapter after posting this yesterday. Unfortunately for you i ordered it from the Australian supplier who I bought my gearbox from (Mal Wood Automotive), so probably not the most convenient or cost effective option for you, though I'm sure they'd sell and ship you one. But the good news I guess is that yes, they are definitely available.
Edit: The other option I guess might be a Speedhut gps speedo if going to aftermarket gauges. I have these in 2 of my other cars due to speedo cable/drive issues and/or for accuracy with regular tyre size changes, and they work great!

Do you have a manufacturer name and part number? I tried one and it broke almost immediately. I sent it in for replacement and the second one broke. So I gave up. But I'd love to get one that worked!
Oh dear, don't tell me that! No, I don't have any numbers. Ordered it yesterday afternoon, should have it this afternoon or Monday, will post then. Do you have info from yours that failed?

This was a few years ago, but all the major Corvette suppliers carried the same one. Iirc the guy at Wilcox recommended only using it for tach drives. A quick web search today shows that Autometer carries one that is clearly different. I may try that one.
I received my right angle speedo adapter today. No part number on part or receipt, but it has “CBI” on the side, which I think from googling probably stands for “Clark Brothers Instrument”, and they seem to offer a wide range of 90 degree speedo cable adapters. Hopefully it holds up, it definitely offers much improved clearance to the exhaust.
Edit: Just noticed the bare reverse wires... Believe it or not, the heatshrink is on the wires just out of the picture, waiting for me to pull out the soldering iron, it was just perfectly framed out of the picture... Fear not, the car will never see the road (or even a battery) while they are that way!

Yeah that's what I am looking for ! I wonder if any of the retrofit TKO transmission vendors have one like Silver Sport Transmissions or Hurst Drivelines ?
I would think they would? If you can't find them elsewhere then I'm sure Mal Wood would send you one, but you should be able to get them more locally to avoid the cost and time of overseas freight (though I buy a lot of parts from the US!).
Is that the stock 7/8" thread? I have found a couple, but they are all 5/8".
Edit: Turns out CBI is only a couple hundred miles away in the great state of Michigan. Their website has a great deal of options for right angle adapters, but I couldn't find exactly what I think I need. But maybe I don't know what I need. I'll email them and see what they say. I'll report back here....you know, for posterity.
I have a 81 manual, (no Cruise) just call Silver Sport Transmission and they will send you the correct cable. This cable has new crimp so no leaks at trans. I did mine last year and think cable is $20.00
