From what I read, the code name for the 454 alu engine was going to be LT2 not ZL2.
RPO ZL2 was already taken for the cold air hood packages.
I have a LT2/ZL2 prototype cowl induction hood for a 1970 Camaro. I bought it from Grumpy Jenkins who got it from Chevy Engineering in 1969 when the 1970 LS6 LS7 LT2 programs got canned. The 70 Camaro cowl induction hood got canned also. Grump gave me a letter stating what it is and where he got it.

Stan - When the first ZL1 Camaro showed up at its first race, it failed tach inspection. The carb numbers did not match the spec sheet Chevy had submitted to NHRA. It turned out that there were no Holley 850s available so the assemble people put on a 780 Holley. So it failed for having (smaller) wrong number carb.
A Chevy engineer was sent to the track to deliver the correct 850.

I heard that GM flew one out special just to appease the techs.

By the way .......A 1969 ZL1 Camaro won the certified pure stock drags last weekend running 12.30 with full stock exhaust including cast iron manifolds and running on OEM type F 70 tires. Certified stock class must pass a NHRA style inspection that includes head removal to check engine specs.

No doubt Mr Turbo Rotary was not the one inspecting it. He is the forum's absolute expert on all L88 and ZL1 cars, which according to him weren't true production engines anyway. He certainly wouldn't believe the 12.30 times!

Here is a photo for Mr. Turbo to stick in his compressor.
This is COPOPete's ZL1 Camaro at the pure stock drags. Hub caps and all.

Joe & Chuck,

Thanks for providing the background for the ZL-1 carburetor story... I remember that there was a problem at tech, but couldn't remember the details.

All of Pete's cars are impressive... And they all run as good as they look too! Joe, did Pete do anything different to the engine than he did last year? I seem to remember that the static compression was off spec (like most engines were back then) and he considered addressing that. If I recall correctly, his times were about the same as last year so if he did do something, there doesn't seem to be much of an improvement.

12.30s on F70-14 bias ply tires... With an engine that really hasn't been blueprinted! Absolutely fantastic!

Regards,

I'm a little surprised that with the no traction F70's, the trap speed wasn't a little higher in view of that 12.30 time. Just trying to get an idea of what my ole' 69/LS7 Camaro might do if I ever decided to try it.

Wow, great thread guys!

I'm a little surprised no mention of the 67 L89s have been mentioned. Only 16 made! I am a super-novice, but I believe the main difference between the L88 and L89 was the L89 had aluminum heads. Correct me if I'm wrong and I know you will. :D

Actually the L-89 is a L-71 with aluminum heads. Completely different from the L-88.

To learn more about the L-89, just check out the L-71 specs and add aluminum heads.

Both the L-88 and L-89 had aluminum heads. The L-71 did not.
