Default Rear sway bar

I'm trying to understand why the po installed a 3/4" bar on the rear, when the bar on the front is also 3/4". I have long since removed the rear bar, did that when I replaced the composite spring. Never got around to putting the bar back on and from what I have read on the forum, if there is one there it should be waaaaay smaller than 3/4". Does the size of the front bar tell me this is a stock installation for my '72 with 350 and automatic? Thanks

The 3/4" front bar is correct for your car. The rear 3/4" is overkill unless a much larger bar had been installed in the past and then removed.

Hi k123,
I believe that for 70-72 model years only 454 equipped cars, and cars with the F41 option, had 9/16" diameter rear sway bars.
I believe that a little later the rear sway bar was reduced to 7/16" diameter. (Unsure when?)
Regards,
Alan

All BB cars had a 9/16 rear GM STYLE rear sway bar. The SB gymkhana C3's had a 1 1/8 inch front bar with the 7/16 inch rear GM STYLE rear bar with sport suspension only in the late 70's/early 80's. The SB Sport suspended cars with the front 1 1/8 inch front bar and the rear 7/16 inch bar understeered with the factory springs and tires.

Yep, my '79 L-82 w/ Gymkhana suspension has 1-1/8" dia. sway bar in front, & 7/16" sway bar in the rear. When I rebuilt both suspensions, I went w/ Bilstein HD shocks in front, & Bilstein Sport shocks in rear, along w/ a 355# composite spring in the back, & new 550# coil springs in front...Noticeably different & BETTER ride!!

you had a 3/4 rear bar because a PO was too cheap to buy a correct size factory bar, I think in 68-69 the BB cars used a 9/16 rear with a 7/8 or 15/16 front bar

I shall not bother with putting the bar back on, likely will try to sell it. My thanks to everyone.
