I'm in the process of cleaning up the engine of my car by hand. I'm supposed to be entering my first show on Oct. 26 but I've reallized that my engine is lightyears away from show quality...I was wondering if anyone out there had found a compond or anything that will help me move along faster and maybe help me meet the deadline. Any help would be appriciated. I believe the stuff I'm using right now is called blue magic. I'm thinking, I should try to get something else that works better. Thanks for any and all help.
For a heavily greased engine, I'd suggest Castrol Purple Degreaser. One BIG CAUTION! This stuff is very CAUSTIC, it contains Sodium Hydroxide which is Lye. The same stuff that is used in oven cleaner. It will foam slightly when sprayed on grease, and should not be allowed to dry on the surface, it should be washed off immeadiately with high pressure water. Wear rubber gloves when using this stuff it will eat the skin off your hands.
It will also remove paint from painted parts if left on too long, but it does work on heavily encrusted parts.
Here's some pictures of my transmission, before and after Castrol Purple and highpressure water at a car wash.
After removing my engine, I took mineral spirits to the engine bay. I used a nylon brush and a jar full of mineral spirits. It worked wonders, and I only used a few quarts.
Just a quick note on simple green....I was in US Coast Guard and we were given drums of the stuff to use on various cleaning tasks around the boats, etc, as a test bed for the product. The stuff is amazing and does a great job on grease and general build up of crud. We lived by the stuff, not to mention it is completely toxic and safe....I have even seen a buddy of mine take his goldfish out of the tank and put it in a bottle of the stuff...keep it there awhile and put it back into the tank an hour later just to prove the point on how safe it is.
