My car was painted with Sherwin Williams # 49762 magnetic red. it was a base coat clear coat. the supplier I got it from now carries matrix and they claim it's a 3 stage paint. I contend that it will be impossible to match with a separate mid coat. the nearest sw dealer is 40 miles away. what is my best option? they have a paint gun that reads paint but it doesn't work. I'm thinking these guys aren't real experts and I should find another store. any ideas
Is there some small painted part that you can mail to S-W so they can make a match? Surely there will be some need for you to make a trip in that direction in near future. What's 80 miles and $10 worth of fuel when you're talking about getting paint matched well for your C3?
BTW....I just bought a quart of matching paint from S-W for my factory-painted '65 Grand Prix -- $150 !!! But NO ONE else could come up with the original formula for the original paint.
Get ready for sticker shock when purchasing good quality paint, these days.
I have a part that I'm going to take to the s-w store, I think our local body supply has turned into clown college.how those people think you could ever have a base clear match a tri coat boggles the mind. I remember painting real candy apple brandywine and praying I'd remember how I mixed it and how many coats if it ever needed to be repaired.
40 miles away? That's a walk in the park. I drive to my camp, 60 miles, at least twice a week. Enjoy the trip and stop for breakfast or lunch while you're at it. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

I agree...It does amaze me that some people have no clue about paint.
And yes....when I shot the old school candy... it was fun. Now the manufacturers are using tri-stage paints on cars and even though they look great....they are no fun to get right when having to do a blend.
The sherwin-Williams guy was slightly helpful. he said there were custom mixes to make that color a 2 stage paint.but he claimed there were several of them.
there is a ray of sunshine in this mess. the lady at the local shop that mixed the color originally has a piece I brought in and is going to give it a shot. a friend that has painted in the past says he'd bet on her nailing it before one of those gun things getting it. so we will see.
the s-w guy made it sound like I was wasting my time making the drive.
I contacted sherwin-williams reference matching the paint on my car. they basically provided me information I provided them. I don't know other people's experience with this line of product but their response is under acceptable . I would strongly recommend anyone getting ready to paint thier car to look elsewhere.
I'm going to get as close a mix as I can then create a stripe on top of the bubble and paint the hood a semi gloss black and call it done.
Not that this will help you now, but I have always used PPG products for paint. Their DBC line, and even the shop line (but that can be hit or miss), has always matched up when repairs were needed. I also use a local paint supply shop. They used to be about 15 min from me but then I moved about 45 miles away for my job. I still make the trip back to them because they are great guys and sell top notch stuff.
I've heard ppg is good. the possibility of a good outcome now rests with the lady at the local shop .she mixed the first 2 batches of paint and given her tenacity and decades of experience there is a faint glimmer of hope. an old friend that used to paint my race cars with a show quality finish says he can match it but he's in northern VIRGINIA and I'm in Florida and at present I can't make the trip.
the fact I haven't heard back from the local shop tells me at least they are trying.
There is no substitute for experience and skill, when it comes to paint. The best color match 'gun' might be within 2% of the actual color. And, when it comes to an expensive paint job, 2% is not good enough.
Glad you found someone who still 'knows' paint!
