ANOTHER PARTS PROBLEM :Cowl/plenum vacuum pod problem

As the thread 'says'...another problem in parts made today.

While working on a 1969 with A/C. I had to remove the wiper door and check the cowl/plenum 'flapper' door pod due to none of the actuator pods were working and it was due to lack of sufficient vacuum.

Showing the cowl/plenum 'flapper door' still installed. All looks good so for except evident age to the parts.

The 'flapper' door removed.

VOILA!!!...one of the culprits of loss of sufficient vacuum.

The new vacuum actuator pod on the flapper door with the original one beside it.

I had to replace the factory hose due to it also was bad and installed a new hose and used corbin clamps to make sure the hose stays put.

I re-installed the factory vacuum hose that is good and installed a new retainer to make sure it also does not fall off.

Installed the set up and got the door to function BUT it would not close all the way.

SO...I removed the assembly and took it apart and compared the original actuator pod to the reproduction and this is what I found.

THis is showing the difference from the new pod where I locked my calipers in place and put it beside the original.

THIS is the measurement of the original actuator pod.

This shows that after I did some modifications...I could get the door to completely close as designed.

Man- that sux- and you can't really bill the customer for that....

Is that the picture- but the re-po canister looks a bit thicker on one side too.

YES..I noticed the canister is a tad but wider...but regardless of that....the photo and the system proved differently.

I AGREE...this totally sux! But as you also know...how often nowadays do the reproduction parts we buy actually go in perfectly the FIRST TIME.

that is why the new unit has longer studs so I can be shimmed to the proper distance

NO.... that is not the reason...because they could have made it right from the get-go.

Simply because when I replaced the vacuum actuator pod (on the same 1969) that gets secured to the firewall side of the heater box for an A/C car...the studs were too long and I had to cut them so the new actuator would be able to go in.

WHAT it is ...is the 95% RULE in full effect....and it is...."95% of the companies that reproduce parts....reproduce then to 95% of being correct. AND it takes 95% of my time to finish out that last 5% and make it so the parts actually works."

And like I should have to send so much time getting things RIGHT....and some people wonder why things cost as much as they do .

Case in point...here is the other actuator vacuum pod for the heater box fore this 1969 with A/C.

I did not photograph it due to I did not think that I would need to show the length of the threaded studs in it. But with the curved vacuum tube coming off of it on the side with the threaded studs...there is NO WAY to get it in without having to cut down the studs. And ...on the other side of the vacuum pod...they left off the pin that would allow the vacuum hose to be retained to it like GM did.

Always leaving stuff off parts to save a buck.
