Hi

Thanks so much.

But this brings me to a new question being, what does NCRS judging say to this now ? Is one losing points by having it modified per SB or loosing points if still the old original ?

And yes, I do need this judging guide book. never thought I would need it as my car will not be judged, but with such great info in it , it's a must have.

Günther

The NCRS standard is to judge the car as it was delivered to the customer with standard dealer prep. If the car has been modified from that you should receive a deduction. Now would you, maybe. It depends on the knowledge of the judges that day. 68's went through a lot of production changes through the course of the year. Most aren't documented in the current 1968 judging guide. Unless you got a really knowledgeable 1968 judge, I doubt you would receive a deduction for having a fiberglass shroud on an early big block car.

I wanted to thank you for those service bulletins concerning the overheating issues with our early 68 BBs.I purchased my 68 5 years ago and always thought I had an original engine bay but everything I read indicated fiberglass shroud. My car is vin 320 all original now (I think)after reading this post. I have the cut outs but no indication of ever having the deflector installed. Can you owners with original shrouds look at mine and confirm they look the same?
Thank you,
Jim

Attached are the scanned pages of the TSB that discusses 427 over heating and the changes that were made to deal with them. Sorry about the quality. It is a scan of a scan.

These were taken from the NCRS Judging Guide. If you don't have one it is a good resource for information.

Jim

It looks to be the real thing to me. It's good to see a left alone original.

Hi

That's exactly how my one looked like before I installed a alu Rad.

That's why I asked the initial question because I couldn't work out why my BB has a steel shroud. If this plastic shroud wouldn't be so expensive, I already would have installed one and possibly have tossed the steel shroud in the mean time as the SB steel shrouds seem to be difficult to sell.

Thanks for the pics confirming my original setup. I will now reinstall the shroud again and install the fan again as well. I removed all due to electric pusher fans in front of the rad. Those can stay as barely visible.

Edit: By the way, I still have the original Rad . It is leaking , but can be repaired by installing a new net. I decided to go alu rad due to overheating issues and it helped, but probably also because the original rad is clogged. I will surely keep the rad in case I or some future owner wants to return to original.

John,
That was one of the conditions that the original owner had when he sold me the car. Never to cover the paint and keep it as original as possible. He said he drove it mostly 1/4 mile at a time and had been stored since 73… I've since rebuilt almost everything and added hooker side mounts and love the noise.

Wesch,
I also considered aluminum but per my promise to the previous owner I had the copper one rebuilt. I have also had overheating issues but have worked most of those out through by:
-insulating starter
-new vacuum advance on distributor
-new battery cables front to back
-retune
I occasionally experience a hot start issue.
Gotta love those 68s,
Jim
