Default Rear T-top mounting plate

While dismantling my 70' and beginning to remove the Chrome T-top plate shown I felt and heard a clinking sound behind the mounting area as I was removing the triangular screw.
Is there a "mounting plate" tac welded originally to the bird cage structure to allow mounting of the "Chrome T-top plate" ? If so it looks extremely complicated to repair if one can. Or do I just have to leave in place and call it a day.
Any thoughts ?

Hi cg,
There is a 'caged' plate mounted to the lock pillar for the roof panel wedge.
The plate needs to be movable so there's an 'fit/gap' adjustment available for that corner of the roof panel.
On many cars the plate is safely contained in the cage so the wedge pin AND 2 screws can be removed.
On some cars because of rust the plate has broken loose from the cage so it's best to leave one of the three in place at all times.
You can gain 'very limited' access to the plate here.
Regards,
Alan

Boy! You've done it now!!! That back-plate is lost to the C3 "black hole"!

Nah....just pulling your leg. If you have a strong magnet, you can place that on the pillar and slide it upward until you have one of the back-plate holes lined-up with the body mounting hole. Just stick one of the screws back in to keep it there until you need to reassemble it.

If you don't have a magnet, you can 'try' to use an icepick thru one of the mounting holes to 'dig' into the back-plate and slide it upward enough to catch it.

You've just created a "Christmas puzzle" for yourself. You'll figure it out...

Yes you have.
Question, is there a small gasket associated with the exposed chrome plate ?

No gasket. There was some kind of adhesive or sealant used between part and pillar. Alan71 will know what was used at the factory. You don't want to use anything that would damage the paint of remain permanent.

Hi,
A gray colored caulk was used on the back of the plate and around the screws.
Mor-Tite weatherstrip caulk from the home store is a good substitute.

Alan

Hi Alan,
I cannot move the rear t-top triangular mount by the halo to adjust the rear of my t-tops correctly on a 1976 Corvette. Any suggestions to freeing up the mount bracket inside the halo so it can move and allow adjustment? They could be rusted or painted in place and stopping adjustment. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hey jobber26, Alan71 is no longer posting on CF but if you provide pictures and post your question on C3 General someone surely will answer your query.
All the best.

Best to start a NEW post on your issue, rather than to attach to a 10 year-old post. Many will see that the initial post was done in 2016 and just bypass it.
