Default Hurst Comp guys - quick question about which mounting hole

Guys:

I have a quick question about mounting a Hurst competition shifter on a Borg Warner Super T-10. There is one larger hole at the top of the plate and two smaller mounting holes toward the bottom of the Hurst plate. Using the smaller hole toward the back of the plate has the shifter more vertical, the other slightly forward leans the shifter back. Based on the instructions I received with the Hurst linkage kit, I installed my shifter in the back hole which puts the shifter more in a vertical position. However my Hurst shift arm has a tendency to hit the console plate when shifting into 3rd. Should it be installed in the front hole thus reclining the shifter a bit toward the back of the car?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

That may work...but I do not know if you have the stop bolts and jamb nuts that are used to set the total throw of the mechanism....which that is what the front and rear bolts coming off the front and rear of the shifter is for.

Your transmission has a specific amount of 'throw' that the parts inside need to move to work. These front and rear bolts allow you to get the shifter to ONLY go as far as it needs to work.

Knowing the first and third gear are moving the shifter forward..I am wondering WHY it is not hitting it in FIRST gear also. Possibly you have some worn parts on the inside of the transmission for THIRD gear that are not that worn in FIRST gear...thus...third gear is hitting.

DUB thanks for the feedback. The trans was supposedly rebuilt. I did find one video on the web showing the shifter box was installed in the same back hole where I had mine installed. I did pick up one of those stock looking shift levers for a Hurst competition shifter. I liked the look, but the shifter was a little low so I ended up welding a 1" x 1/2" steel block onto the shifter arm at a slight angle to not only raise the shifter but also tilt it back a bit. With the shifter mounted to the back hole in the mounting plate, the shifter is now centered right in the console plate and does not contact any edge when shifting. I probably should just leave it the way I have it now.
