Timing chain fix and other things....
I recently finished a timing chain and sprockets replacement on my big block. That ultimately ended up in a aluminum radiator. 7 blade fan, high flow water pump, the Lars juiced distributor, and a first name relationship with a couple of UPS people. The while I am it syndrome was to clean up and paint some of the stuff around the radiator and suspension and heater core shutoff system.
It was a new and slow experience for me, but the outcome was well worth it. Thanks to Lars for some phone and email consulting. During disassembly, the old aluminum/nylon gear was so bad that the chain lifted off without removing the cam gear. The cars runs excellent!!!!! What a performance improvement. It runs cool as cucumber, even sitting at idle in the driveway on a 80's humid day. This car is just a stock street car, but such improved performance.
Thanks also to folks here who answered and provided some advice.
I know everyone likes to drive them, but if you have a big block with the original timing chain and gears, I would suggest a changeout of the timing chain and gears.
