it was on later year models to keep the rear end from trying to twist under torque, i think

Found on 80-82 models, commonly referred to as the "Batwing". It serves as the rear cover and the mount for the differential.

Sure is pretty. Too bad they aren't as strong as the previous cast iron units.

The aluminum batwing saves about 30 pounds over the cast iron units but considering the lack of strength/durability of the batwing with really any additional power, the weight savings is a very marginal benefit....unless the engine is stock power level
