Default Header Help

I am trying to decide on a set of long tube headers.
This is in a 1970, 427, 4sp no A/C to deal with.

My requirements are, ceramic-metallic coating or other thermal coating, long tube, tuned (although not sure if this really much?, color is not important to me and I would like the 2 1/8" tube diameter (not sure I guess I could 1 7/8" tube - just want to help breathing)

From the searches I have done -

Hedman - good road clearance and it sounds like ease or installation smaller tube diameter.

Hooker - sounds like the 2 1/8 have road clearance issues...

Is there a comparison of various headers out there that I missed?

Thanks

Thanks, over 160 people have red this post,,,, Croaker gives me a one word reply,,,, lol,,,, according to the Holley/Flowtech web site they only have one long tube header for the corvette it comes in ceramic or black paint. For all you small block people out there this header looks very nice, unfortunately no big block long tube headers on their web site.

Any other ideas or suggestions out there?

I can only speak to the 2 1/8 Hookers. Very little ground clearance. Only way to possible make them work would be to grind off flanges and use a slip fit connection. I ended up getting custom headers made.

Default Headers

I put a set of long tube Hedmans on a 73 454 vette back in the 90''s with no problems.

Thanks
It seems that everyone has ground clearance issues with the Hookers, however, I have not seen any negative comments about the Hedmans, other than the tubes are smaller diameter - not sure if the "tuned" makes a difference. I will ask my auto machine shop.
I am now looking at the Dougs headers side pipes as an option. The comments on this site seem that they fit well - my only problem now would be how to easily close out the rear body exhaust opening under the bumper without getting into new body panels and paint etc...

I have the Flowtech from Summit - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/b...make/chevrolet

I'm happy with them. Nice finish and reasonable price. They installed fine in my 81.

Jim,
Thanks, they look great, however, when I looked on line they do not make these for the big block only for the small block.

I would keep the z bar if ( you have one in) the back of my mind when making the decision.

My friend put Hedman Headers on his 454 1970, 2 summers ago - he likes them. I think you have to paint them, they were cheep.

By referencingthe Z bar - I assume you are talking about the part that goes from theengine over to the mount on the frame and one end connects to the clutch pedallinkage while the other end connects to the rod that goes to the clutch arm (throw-outbearing ?
Yes I have this - I did not know that some people take this out?
If you remove this what would you use to engage/disengage the clutch?
Do people convert to hydraulic ?
thanks

All,

Well I am about ready to go with Hedmans 68093.

I put this list together and would be happy to maintain the list with your comments.
Possibly later we could add it to a "sticky" thread as Headers must always come up..

HeaderInformation

My Focus– 1970 427 4sp

PartNumbers and comments – please send me part numbers and your related comments Iwill compile this list. This is what Ihave so far – I focused on what I am looking for but others can add what theyknow in this thread and I will add it to my word document for all to use.Prices are rounded.

Hooker

BigBlock

  • Full Length Long Tube – consensus, very low clearance.
  • Side pipes

SmallBlock

  • Comments?

Hedmans 562 921 0404

BigBlock

  • Full Length Long Tube – Black Ceramic
    • 63097 $590 – Black Ceramic, Primary 2”, Collector3” to 2.5” exit, Tuned no, PB yes PS yes A/C yes, without A.I.R., ball & socket. This has the California Executive Order (EO) andthis will pass smog check, however, this is the same header as 68093 justpaying more for the California Smog EO.
    • 63193 $660 – Black Ceramic, Primary 2”, Collector3” to 2.5” exit, Tuned no, PB yes PS yes A/C yes, with A.I.R., ball & socket.
    • 68093 $510 – Black Ceramic, Primary 2”, Collector3” to 2.5” exit, Tuned no, PB yes PS yes A/C yes, without A.I.R., ball & socket. This does not have the California ExecutiveOrder number so in a 1974 or newer car it will fail smog check, however it isidentical to 63097.
  • Other part numbers?

SmallBlock

  • Comments

FlowTech – By Holley 866 4646553

BigBlock

  • Nothing Offered

SmallBlock

  • Comments – people like these, easy installgood clearance

Dougs – 909 599 5955

BigBlock

  • Full Length Long Tube
    • Nothing Offered
  • Side Pipes
    • Chrome, Silver Ceramic, Black Paint, no BlackCeramic.
    • Good comments on Form – all easy install, look & sound great, you do need to do some mods to the rocker panel to bolton the side pipe

The Hooker 2 1/8 sidepipe headers are fine. I thought we were talking about under chassis headers. My bad. But beware of anything Hooker these days. Mine needed a ton of work to fit right. And I am talking about the sidemounts.

For a 427 you definitely don't need 2-1/8. Way too much. I've dynod 540s that didn't show much improvement until you got past 6400 or so against 2l". My old 427 in my Camaro ran low 11s with 1-3/4. I added 2" and slowed sixty foots and picked up top end a little. About a wash overall. 1-7/8 would have been perfect. This was a 6500+ rpm motor with a solid lifter cam.

2-1/8 are for 7000 rpm 540s. Or smaller with a lot of nitrous.

Jim.

Yes some people do convert to Hydraulic Throw out bearings. Sometimes the Z bar can be problematic in terms of clearance.

I have it on my 85 and it's easier on the foot and somewhat smother.

Don't buy any Hooker Headers with the black ceramic coating on them. The coating deteriorates and rust starts to come through the coating. I have read this here on other threads as well. The coating is crap.

My FIL has Billy Boat side pipes on a '78. Now those are some quality pieces.
