All,
My 68 427/400 slightly higher compression over stock. Haven't seen anything recently on dependable options for HT starters.
I have already:
-all new cables front to back incl. grounds
-hooker side pipes
-starter wrap
-tune up appears to be spot on (car runs awesome) and doesn't overheat any more.
-BUT does crank really hard when hot..
I'm not going to deal with stock BB starters at this point..
Looking for recommendations please.
Thanks,
Jim
I messed with a high torque mini starter in my 68 427/400 car, it turned out to be a giant waste of time and money and I went back to the stock starter. I went with a Ford solenoid too which helps with the hot no-start problem. But also check the condition of your wiring from the key switch to the starter, pay very close attention to the firewall harness plug as well. I found that mine wasn't seated correctly which can cause lots of "come and go" problems as well as not getting enough juice to the starter to pull the solenoid.

I had issues with my 383 and stock starters, toasted two brand new ones. Got a PowerMaster mini HT and haven't had any issues at all ever since, that was seven years ago and I live in AZ.
Thank you all for the Powermaster recommendations. Is this the model your using "Powermaster XS Torque Starters 9526"?

It looks suspiciously like the CVR but with a different billet mount plate.
Not surprising really........
A big bonus to these is being able to clock it so the motor is far away from the header........
Hello,
I have 10.25 compression and have no issues with my mini torque from DEI.
Cranks fast and no heat soak like the stock "HD" Gm starter on her when I purchased her.
Stock was great cold but after an hour or so it would turn over slowly.
Kinda scary when far away from home.
Check out DEI. It works on mine.
Bolts up with the supplied 2 new bolts no shims were required.
Check timing statically maybe advanced to far for starting reasons but runs fine?
1968 427/390 motor.

I use the Powermaster 9526 on my 69 427/390 168 tooth so it's the same for yours. 10.25 compression and I run 17 degrees initial advance. It turns over the same speed whether its hot or cold. A really nice starter and you can clock it for position. A bit expensive but worth it.

I believe it is....it had a XS High Torque sticker on it......
Note these are 2 terminal starters, they Do Not have a Run terminal like OEM.
if your running stock type ignition you will need to source power for Dist.
instead of the "Run" wire going to the starter.
correction: Usually does not come with "R" terminal.

CVR does make a starter with a "R" terminal on it as well......
I use a GM high torque gear reduction starter in my '79 and haven't had a starting issue since. Cheaper than the aftermarket starters (at least it was when I bought mine). Assuming you have the 168 tooth flywheel the starter from a 96 Chevy full size truck should work.
I had lot's of trouble with a stock starter and heat soak on my 64 SS. I put a cheap Ebay gear reduction and it never had an issue for all the years I owned it. I put one on my 80 Vette too when the engine in my signature was in it. Never an issue.
