I want to further break down the box for cleaning, lubing, etc., but I've come across this rivet. It appears to be an original one, but want to know from you experts if it really is, or did someone add it on?

Thanks much.
Steve

Cavu2u, I assume you were able to remove the heater core housing once you removed the 7/16 nut on the engine side of the firewall. My 73 has four studs with 7/16 nuts on the engine side. Following the shop manual, I removed the four nuts, the console and floor vents but the heater core housing will not budge. I am afraid to really try and force it out if there is some thing else holding it in there, don't know if anyone else has had this problem. Does the core housing remove easily or is there some kind of adhesive holding it in place? Thanks to anyone, I don't know if this thread is too old but hopefully I can get some insight.

Ya know it's been so long, I can't remember the details. But it did come out without too much issue. Your hoses are off, right? I kinda remember a clamp between the two tubes. My computer took a dump this summer and lost all the photos I had on it, as well as many other Vette fixes.
BTW, I bought a replacement core from O'Reilly's for my A/C car and it was lightweight, cheap, and didn't fit. If you have the original Harrison, KEEP IT! Take it to a radiator shop for repair. That's what I ended up doing and no problems since.

Good luck on yours.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I bought a replacement from MAMOTORWORKS but probably a made in China replacement. I guess I will just ry to pry it out. I guess it has been in there for 49 years.

Thanks again,

Bruce

Hi, are you removing the core from the engine side? Much easier if you don't have a/c. If you are, here are a couple of tips:
  • There is a clip, on the right side of the core as you're looking at it if I remember correctly. You need to remove the clip first before trying to get the core out. It can be a bit hard to see it, but you'll find it. 2 small bolts hold it in if I'm remembering correctly.
  • You need to remove the core by sliding it out 'sideways', not directly straight forward - after the clip is removed.
  • It's a very tight fit. Expect that you'll need to work it to get it out.
  • The replacements are generally just a tad larger, so getting them back in can be a bit more difficult. I had to use a dremel tool and widen the area out just a bit. No problem because the box will cover it no problem.
  • When installing the replacement core, DO NOT handle it by the heater hose in/outlets. They are just brazed on and you can loosen them if you try to force the core in by handling the core with them.
Good luck!! Paul
